ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- An Albuquerque Police Department officer who went well beyond the call of duty is the first recipient of a new award by Mayor Tim Keller.
Lapel video shows officer Ryan Holets encountering a pregnant woman during a drug call. Afterward, he and his family agreed to adopt her baby.
The child, named Hope, suffered through drug withdrawals. She's now out of the hospital and joined her adopted dad to receive the Outstanding Service to the Community Award.
While the city praised Holets' service, the officer took a moment to thank everyone who has sent in letters of support.
"There have been people who they talk about how they don't have very much themselves," he said. "They don't have very much money, but they'll stick in a $10 bill saying, 'Hey, please use this.' The notes are just touching."
Holets said he has stayed in contact with Hope's parents and is working to get them into rehab. He is also leaving the door open for them to become a part of her life.
